A fundamental characteristic of Vietnamese modernist architecture is its lightness, compared with global modernism. This lightness was often created by the use of very thin elements in the composition, such as the trellis elements at the roof of this townhouse. This shophouse was located at 411 Nguyễn Khiệm street in the Phú Nhuận district of Ho Chi Minh City. It has since been remodeled beyond recognition to a bland commercial style, and the trellis elements were demolished.
