This house in the Tân Định area of District One in Ho Chi Minh City shows the expressive side of Vietnamese modernist architecture. The butterfly roof and the angular hooded window are adaptations to the tropical climate while providing whimsy in an otherwise rectilinear modernist composition. Unfortunately, high fences and gates make architectural photography difficult in Vietnam, so we can’t see what is probably a very interesting ground floor facade. There are parallels here to California mid-century modernist architecture.
