When the vast majority of houses in southern Vietnam are modernist, you can be forgiven for not seeing them anymore. They line all the streets and lanes of the cities and villages. They are “ordinary” houses. But they are magnificently Vietnamese modernist architecture! This simple apartment house is a good example. It exhibits the principles of VMA with its expression of structure, inset exterior wall to reduce sun exposure, and simple detailing that is nevertheless composed and interesting. It is simple but still more complicated than the more minimalist western architecture.
